What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar Disorder is marked by intense mood changes that impact daily life.

  • Mania/Hypomania: Elevated or irritable mood, high energy, impulsivity, and less need for sleep.

  • Depression: Ongoing sadness, low energy, loss of interest, and sometimes thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar I: Manic episodes lasting at least 7 days or requiring hospitalization, often followed by depressive episodes.
Bipolar II: Depressive and hypomanic episodes, without full manic episodes.
Cyclothymia: Milder mood swings with periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that don’t meet full diagnostic criteria.

Key Strategies

  • Mood Tracking: Journals or apps to spot early warning signs.

  • Consistent Therapy: Ongoing support and coping strategies.

  • Medication Management: Regular check-ins to fine-tune treatment.

  • Stress Reduction: Mindfulness, breathing exercises, and yoga to prevent episodes.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Bipolar Disorder is diagnosed through a thorough psychiatric evaluation, often involving interviews, physical exams, and sometimes blood tests to rule out other conditions.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Medications: Mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants help balance mood swings.

  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other therapeutic approaches provide individuals with tools to manage emotions, behavior, and relationships.

  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Establishing a stable routine, prioritizing sleep, managing stress, and avoiding alcohol and drugs can significantly reduce mood episodes.
